The Year of Faith; Pope John XXIII
Pope John XXIII's episcopal motto was "Obedience and Peace." These two virtues became the guiding lights of his life in general and of his papacy in particular. Renowned as the gentle pope, John XXIII managed to address the issues of his day in spite of stiff opposition from the Curial Officials with whom he had to work. He won them over by being a man of integrity, compromise, and peace.
The Documents of Vatican II are the results of his life, in many ways. His ability to listen to the "signs of the times" and to allow the Church to move into the modern world with its wonderful Gospel message is captured in the writings of the Council. Pope Benedict XVI has called for the Year of Faith to begin with and to sink deep roots in these Conciliar Documents. They are worth a read or a reread in light of the signs of our times.
